MÂNDRĂ MĂRIE
The blue plasterboards are reminiscent of architectural elements that could be part of a larger whole. They look like small closed gates waiting to be opened to reveal their origins. The fossil-like frames consist of an assortment of fossilised objects such as plastic bottle caps, flutes, crucifixes, macramé works and much more. A tangled web that is partly held together by fingers coming out.
During a research trip through Transylvania, I collected imprints of various doorways and house entrances and put them together to form a picture with other everyday objects. The panels are coloured with a simulated patina in a blue that the old villagers in Transylvania call Mândră Mărie, which translates as "Proud Mary". This blue colour, which is disappearing more and more from the villagescapes today, gives the sculptures a deep cultural significance and reminds us of a bygone era.
